Dear Baseball Fan:

My name is Robert Bulka. I have been a baseball fan all my life. When I
was a little kid, It was a ritual for Dad and I to catch every Yankees
game we could. Money was tight, so trips to the Bronx were rare. We had
to be content to sit at home and watch the games on TV. That was, of
course, provided that Mom didn't have other plans for the TV at game
time. In those cases, we were relegated to the kitchen to listen to the
Bill White call the game on the radio. But whether we were at the
Stadium, in front of the TV, or sitting around the radio, we'd always
score the game, taking turns every inning.

Dad taught me the basics of scoring just about the time I started going
to school, and by the time I started Little League, I was almost an
expert. Dad was always there to help me when I encountered a play I
didn't know how to score. I still have some of those scorecards from a
few memorable games, with Dad's crisp lines and careful notations, and
my barely legible chicken-scratch.

As I grew older, I realized just how much scorekeeping with Dad taught
me about the game of baseball. I had developed a pretty complete
knowledge of the rules, a good understanding of the strategies employed
by managers, and most importantly, a genuine love for the game.

The memories of the time Dad and I spent scoring those baseball games
are priceless, and the bond that we developed as a result of our
baseball sessions is strong to this day. Now, I'm sharing the same
ritual with my son, Bobby. That father-son bond is impossible to
describe.

Those experiences prompted me to write this ebook. My Dad is a student
of the game, so his knowledge was extensive, even back then. But not
every baseball fan understands the game at that level. For those
people, this book is written for you.

on your competition. When you know how to score baseball, you can
analyze your team's performance, as well as your opponents, and develop
a winning game strategy.

provides a way for you to measure the progress they're making. It's a
great supportive and motivational tool!

Many people (maybe even you!) have had a desire to learn to score a
baseball game, but the process seemed very involved and hard to
comprehend. We've all sat at the ball field and watched as an avid fan
covered his scoresheet with what look like odd-looking codes or alien
languages. Maybe you've even envied that fan because he had the
intelligence to understand this cryptic code.

Well, I'm here to tell you that I've made it easy and fun to learn
Baseball Scoring! Each scenario is explained, and accompanied by an
illustration of how to score that exact situation.

what's happening on the field, even in the most unusual circumstances.
Here's an actual excerpt from the book to show you what I mean:

Scoring a Ground Out

Most ground ball outs involve more than one defensive player. The out
is entered by recording each defensive player's position number in the
sequential order in which they handle the ball.

The outs are entered into the hitter's cell for the inning in which
they bat.

The scorekeeping entry to the right illustrates the ground ball out of
the First Baseman, Jones in the First Inning. He hit a ground ball to
the third baseman who caught it and threw the ball to the first baseman
for the first out of the inning.

It is recorded in the scorebook as a "5-3'' ground out; where "5''
represents the third baseman catching the ground ball and "3''
represents the first baseman catching the throw from the third baseman
for the out (notice the sequence of the play is repeated in the
scoring).

The number "1" with a circle around it is used to help keep track of
the number of outs in an inning. This is a good habit to get into!

The boxes in the upper left hand corner of each cell represents balls
and strikes. You can keep track of the batter's count and count the
number of pitchers by entering a dot after each pitch. The top three
squares are to track balls, the bottom two for strikes. The ball that
is hit in play is not recorded.
